Police: Impaired Hit And Run U-Haul Driver Caught Drinking Beer At Bar

A 32 year-old man is facing charges following a hit and run accident in Downtown Smithfield.

Smithfield Police said they received a report of a hit and run accident in the 200 block of E. Market Street around 5:30pm Thursday.  A witness said a U-Haul truck sideswiped a Buick parked beside Market Street causing about $1,000 in damage to the car.  The U-Haul never stopped at the scene. A second eyewitness began to follow the U-Haul and called police.

The witness said after the crash the driver stopped 20 to 30 seconds for a green light on Market Street before proceeding through the intersection. The suspect then reportedly drove to the Little Brown Jug at 101 W. Market Street and went inside.  When police arrived the accused driver had consumed about three-fourths of a beer in a very short period of time.

Jonathan Marshall Beasley of New Church, Virginia was arrested and charged with driving while impaired and hit and run.

Police Captain R. Sheppard said Beasley registered 0.21 on the Breathalyzer, well above the legal limit of 0.08.

Police towed the U-Haul from the business. Beasley was later released on a $3,000 bond.
