Police Interrupt Drug Deal In Wal-Mart Parking Lot

Two people were arrested on drug trafficking charges outside of Wal-Mart on North Brightleaf Boulevard in Smithfield Wednesday afternoon.

Around 3:15pm, a Smithfield police officer was on patrol in the parking lot and recognized a man recently trespassed from Wal-Mart for a prior shoplifting incident.  As the officer stopped to speak with the man, Justin Daniel Hamlet, 21, of Browns Pond Road, Selma, police allegedly saw him throw a bag of marijuana on the ground. He was detained.

Police said also they located Julie Marie Lopez, 29, of Mallard Road, Smithfield who was at Wal-Mart with Hamlet.

Police Chief Keith Powell said officers determined Lopez had gone inside Wal-Mart to fill a prescription for oxycodone, then met Hamlet outside to sell him the pills.

During a search of a vehicle, a shotgun, $28 cash, cell phones, a marijuana pipe, grinder, glass jar, digital scales, 1.4 grams of marijuana, and 12 oxycodone pills were allegedly found.

Both Hamlet and Lopez were charged with trafficking opiates and felony conspiracy.

Hamlet was given a $275,000 bond. Lopez was held under a $185,000 bond.
