Postal Carrier Wanted On Child Sex Charges Captured By US Marshals

A Johnston County man who worked as a letter carrier for the US Postal Service has been returned to North Carolina to stand trial on charges he took indecent liberties with a minor.

On Friday, the Johnston County Sheriff’s Office announced the arrest of 51 year-old George Lewis of Greenway Drive, Clayton.  On August 24th, a complaint was filed with authorities alleging Lewis had inappropriate contact with a 9 year-old female child.

Sheriff’s detectives contacted Lewis who reportedly agreed to come to the sheriff’s office on September 6th for an interview.  After he failed to show up, authorities said they learned Lewis, who worked for the US Postal Service in Cary, had fled from the state and was possibly headed to Massachusetts.

While searching for Lewis, investigators said they learned Lewis had applied for a transfer to work at a post office in Maine.

On September 11th, the US Marshals Office located Lewis at his mother’s home in Massachusetts and he was taken into custody without further incident.   Lewis was held in a Massachusetts jail until his return to Johnston County on Thursday where he was formally charged with two counts of taking indecent liberties with a child.

Lewis was held under a $200,000 secured bond.
