Authorities have arrested a 47 year-old woman they allege stole from her elderly grandmother entrusted to her care.
Earlier this year, Sonya Williams Imhotep of Goldsboro moved in to care for her ailing 84 year-old grandmother in Smithfield. Imhotep was to provide medical care to her grandmother and also look after her finances.
Instead, she allegedly used her grandmother’s debit card to make cash withdrawals from ATM’s, opened up credit card accounts in her name, and even obtained loans in the name of her grandmother.
The Johnston County Sheriff’s Office did not disclose a dollar amount of the money allegedly taken from the elderly woman.
Imhotep was charged Monday with felony exploitation of the elderly and felony identity theft. She was booked into the Johnston County Jail under a $45,000 bond.
Officials said there was no evidence of any physical abuse.
