Report: Suspect Caught Stealing Lumber From Subdivision

SMITHFIELD – A 34 year-old man was arrested last week after he allegedly stole lumber from a subdivision under construction not far from his home.  On August 31st around 9:30pm,  an employee with Scott Lee Homes of Clayton reportedly caught a man operating pickup truck filled with stolen lumber in a new subdivision on Cleveland Road at Swift Creek Road.

The employee tried to use his vehicle to block the pickup truck from fleeing however the suspect managed to drive away. 

Johnston County deputies responded and took a report about the lumber theft.  Later, officers spotted the suspect vehicle on Brightleaf Boulevard and conducted a traffic stop. 

Elvin Martinez-Maldonado, 34, of the 6100 block of Swift Creek Road, Smithfield was charged with possession of stolen property and misdemeanor larceny.  The lumber had been removed from the truck at the time of the traffic stop and was not recovered.

Martinez-Maldonado was released on a $3,500 bond pending a court appearance.
