Restaurant Employee Who Shot Himself Facing Criminal Charges

An employee at a Smithfield restaurant who accidentally shot himself while at work last week is facing charges.

On Tuesday, August 6th, Smithfield Police responded to San Marcos Mexican Restaurant at 275 N. Equity Drive.  Police said 24 year-old Ivan Cardenas of Selma forgot to remove a 9mm handgun from his pocket after arriving at work. The gun later discharged while in his pocket. The bullet struck him in the leg.

Cardenas was treated and released at the hospital for a non-life threatening wound.  No one else was injured.

On Friday, August 9th, Cardenas turned himself in and was charged with discharging a firearm in an occupied building and carrying a concealed weapon. He was given a $40,000 bond. Photos
