Roommate Charged In Murder Of Selma Man

A 50 year-old Selma man has been charged with murdering his roommate.  66 year-old Vondell Bethune was shot and killed inside his home at 7529 Buffalo Road, Selma Sunday afternoon. Johnston County deputies responded to the address at 6:47pm, according to Sheriff Steve Bizzell, for a report of a deceased person. When officers arrived they found Bethune’s body inside the residence.

Alvin Demetrus Harris, of the same address, turned himself in at the Johnston County Sheriff’s Office in Smithfield Sunday evening.

Sheriff’s investigators did not release a motive for the homicide, however the victim’s father, Nathaniel Bethune Sr. of Wilson, told JoCoReport that Vondell had asked his roommate to move out of the home. A verbal altercation followed he said, during which Harris allegedly shot and killed Vondell Bethune.  Harris had been staying at the address for 7 to 8 months, family members said.

Vondell Bethune was a deacon at White Oak Hill Missionary Baptist Church on Highway 231, Middlesex in northern Johnston County. His father and brother said Vondell was at church on Sunday.

“He loved to go to church,” Dwight Bethune said of his older brother. “Every time there was a service he was going.”

Alvin Harris is being held in the Johnston County Jail without privilege of bond.
