Roommate Indicted In Selma Murder

Hours after 66 year-old Vondell Bethune of Selma got home from church he was killed inside his home.  Bethune was a deacon at White Oak Hill Missionary Baptist Church on Highway 231 near Middlesex.  Bethune lived at 7529 Buffalo Road, Selma.

On August 11, 2019, the Johnston County Sheriff’s Office said Bethune was inside his home when he was murdered.  His roommate, 50 year-old Alvin Demetrius Harris, turned himself into authorities that same day.

On September 3, 2019, a Grand Jury in Smithfield indicted Harris on one count of murder.

Bethune’s family said Harris had recently been asked to move out of the home. They said a verbal altercation followed, during which Harris allegedly shot and killed Vondell Bethune.  While family members have said Bethune was shot and killed, authorities have not officially said how Bethune died.

Harris had been staying at the address for 7 to 8 months, family members said.

“He loved to go to church,” Dwight Bethune said of his older brother. “Every time there was a service, he was going.”

Alvin Harris is being held in the Johnston County Jail without privilege of bond.
