Emergency personnel have suspended their search for a man reportedly yelling for help in a wooded area in southern Johnston County.
Around 6:30am today (Monday), a group of hunters were in their tree stands in a wooded area off Highway 701 South near Infantry Drive in the Bentonville community when they reportedly saw an unknown man nearby. When the man spotted the hunters he reportedly yelled for help.
When the hunters got out of their stands and attempted to locate the man he could not be found.
The Johnston County Sheriff’s Office Search & Rescue Team was joined by members of the Bentonville, Strickland’s Crossroads, Benson and Four Oaks Fire Departments in the search. Deputies also deployed a drone and K-9. A command post was established at Small Chapel Church on US 701. After searching for six hours there were no signs of the individual.
This afternoon, Sheriff’s Captain Danny Johnson said the search was suspended after authorities were unable to locate the individual or confirm anyone was in the wooded area in need of assistance.
