A sex offender was arrested recently by the Johnston County Sheriff’s Office. Edward Montrelle Burgess, 34, of Smithfield was charged with failing to report his address as a sex offender, a felony.
In February 2021, the sheriff’s office tried to make contact with Burgess to confirm he was still living at his last known listed address on Barbour Road in West Smithfield. Authorities learned he had moved and failed to notify authorities of his new address, a condition of his release.
On March 8th, Burgess was arrested after the car he was riding in was pulled over during a traffic stop. He was served with a felony warrant and confined in the Johnston County Jail on a $40,000 secured bond.
According to the NC Sex Offender Registry, Burgess was convicted in February 2012 of taking indecent liberties with a 14 year-old minor in Johnston County. He was sentenced to 36 months probation.
