Sex Offender Was Living Next To Elementary School

MICRO – A registered sex offender is facing charges in two counties after he reportedly moved from his listed address in Franklin County to a home next door to a Johnston County elementary school.

Christopher Wayne Strickland, age 38, of 203 E. Goldsboro Street, Micro was arrested this week by the Johnston County Sheriff’s Office.

Sheriff’s detectives said they received an anonymous tip Strickland was living next door to Micro Elementary School. Strickland had listed his address on the NC Sex Offender Registry in Louisburg, NC, in Franklin County.

An investigation by the Johnston and Franklin County Sheriff Offices revealed Strickland had been evicted from his home in Louisburg and had moved to the Micro address in late December 2021.

GIS records show the E. Goldsboro Street home shares a property line with Micro Elementary. Johnston County deputies went to the home Tuesday and arrested Strickland on two felony charges from Franklin County and two felony charges from Johnston. The charges include failure to report a new address as a sex offender and a sex offender residence violation.

Johnston County Public Schools released the following statement: “We are thankful to those who made the anonymous tip in this situation, and for our longstanding relationship with the Johnston County Sheriff’s Office. We’re appreciative of their swift response and the practices that they have in place to ensure safety in our communities.”

There was no evidence Strickland had been on the campus of Micro Elementary.

According to the Registry, Strickland was convicted in Wake County in 2011 for taking indecent liberties with a 15 year-old. At the time of the incident Strickland was 26 years old. He served 18 month in prison before being released in 2012.

Strickland was held on a $100,000 bond this week at the Johnston County Jail.
