Sheriff: Video Of Man Vandalizing Church Cross ‘Very Disturbing’

The search is on for a Johnston County man wanted for vandalizing a cross outside a rural country church.

A surveillance video camera at New Zealand Pentecostal Holiness Church at 5312 Meadowbrook Road outside of Benson captured the vandalism.

At 12:44am Wednesday, the suspect walked up to the 8 foot cross in front of the church and forcibly removed it from the ground. After removing the cross made of 4×4 lumber the man turned the cross over and placed it back in the hole upside down, the video shows.

The suspect has been identified as a next door neighbor of the church, Christopher Gray Evans of 5312 Meadowbrook Road, Benson.

Johnston County Sheriff’s Captain Jeff Caldwell said once Evans is located he will be charged with injury to property.

“He needs what the cross has to offer,” Sheriff Steve Bizzell told WTSB News and on Friday. “It is very disturbing when people vandalize and damage church property.  When you mess with God’s house it doesn’t get any more serious than that.”

Anyone with information on the whereabouts of Christopher Gray Evans is asked to contact the Johnston County Sheriff’s Office at 919-989-5000.
