Smithfield Man Charged In Clayton Lumber Theft

CLAYTON – A Smithfield man was arrested Friday afternoon after he reportedly stole $4,025 in lumber from a Clayton business. The theft was reported at 12:53pm at Builders First Choice on North Tech Drive, off Powhatan Road.

Antonio Maurice Groves, age 49, of Ogburn Road, Smithfield allegedly stolen 70 sheets of OSB lumber then left in a vehicle. He was located on Highway 70 a short time later. He allegedly admitted to Johnston County deputies to taking the items.

Groves was charged with felony larceny. He was transported to the Johnston County Jail and held on a $30,000 secured bond. The stolen OSB was returned to the business.
