Smithfield Sewer, Trash Collection Rates Increasing Sept. 1

The Smithfield Town Council has voted to pass along a rate increase from the County of Johnston to town residents. On June 21, 2021, County Commissioners approved a 5 percent increase in wastewater treatment costs plus an increase of $3 per ton to dispose of debris at the county landfill. The new County rates went into effect July 1.

Smithfield did not budget for the increases and the town board voted this month to pass along the direct cost to customers.

Beginning September 1, 2021, in-town residential sewer rates will increase from $9.13 to $9.32 per 1,000 gallons. The out-of-town rate will increase from $18.26 to $18.45.

Residential trash collection rates will increase from $17.24 to $17.65 per month for one roll-out container. Backyard collection rates will go from $22.24 to $22.65 for one container. The cost to pick up a large pile of debris, equal to 8 cubic yards, will increase from $90 to $94 per truck load.

Town administrators had recommended approval of the rate hike.

  1. But yet we get grant money to help out the town to make itself pretty and supposedly to help the community. Wonder where all that grant money went to?
