Son Pleads Guilty To Killing Father

A Johnston County man will spend the next 5 to 7 years in prison for fatally shooting his father.

On March 4, 2017, Evan Thomas Lee shot and killed his father, 68 year-old James Russell Lee inside the family home in the 3800 block of US 70-A outside of Princeton.

Evan Lee was still at the scene when Johnston County deputies arrived.  In April 2017, a Johnston County Grand Jury indicted the 37 year-old man for first degree murder.

This week, Lee pled guilty to a lesser offense of voluntary manslaughter and was sentenced to serve a minimum of 5 years to a maximum of 7 years in the Division of Adult Correction.

Lee did not make any statements in court on Wednesday.

An exact motive was never determined but prosecutors said Evan Lee began arguing with his father about family matters on the day James Lee was killed. As the argument escalated, Assistant District Attorney Jordan Ford said Evan Lee shot his father fatally in the left abdomen.

There were no actual witnesses to the shooting although the defendant’s brother and his brother’s girlfriend were at the home and heard the fatal gunshot.
