A Johnston County convenience store clerk and her boyfriend were arrested on felony charges Wednesday following an investigation into missing money and merchandise.
On June 21st, the Short Stop at 7361 Highway 50 South of Benson in the Meadow community reported $651.82 had been taken from the business.
Following an investigation by the Johnston County Sheriff’s Office, Dahlila Maria Cortes, 22, and her boyfriend, Sean Alexander Manning, 28, both of the 1900 block of Highway 242 South, Benson were arrested.
Deputies allege Cortes would take cash payments for merchandise and instead of placing the payment in the register would set the money to the side. After the customer left the store she would void the transaction and place the money in her pocket. In one day, 40 transactions were voided.
Cortes reportedly allowed her boyfriend to leave the business without paying for an undetermined amount of cigarettes.
Cortes was charged with felony larceny by an employee and felony conspiracy. Manning was charged with one count of felony conspiracy.
Both were confined in the Johnston County Jail under a $10,000 bond. Their arrest reports on Wednesday indicated both were unemployed.
