Suspect Arrested For 16th Time At Same Church

ANGIER – In what has become an frequent occurrence, a Johnston County man has been arrested once again at the same church.

Elton Eugene Bryant, 54, of Brentwood Circle, Angier was arrested Jan. 24th as he walked onto the property of Pine Grove Chapel Baptist Church at 4440 Piney Grove Road, Angier.  His arrest marked the 16th time since 2012 Bryant has been arrested at the church.

Bryant had most recently been arrested Nov. 29th, 2020 for trespassing.   Those charges were dismissed in December 2020.

On Jan. 24th he was arrested on church property for felony stalking.  The alleged stalking victim was church pastor Timmy Blair.  On Jan. 25th, Bryant was charged with probation violation for a prior conviction of stalking Rev. Blair.

We attempted to reach Rev. Blair for a comment but no one answered at the phone number listed for Piney Grove Church.

In 2017, Pastor Blair released a statement to us following one of Bryant’s arrests saying in part, “All people are welcome as long as they have a desire to worship God and glorify His name.  We take very seriously the security of those who worship with us in light of the various shootings and other security concerns that have occurred in churches across our nation over the last few years.  It is my responsibility to insure that our congregation and those who choose to worship at Piney Grove are not intimidated or feel threatened in any way. We seek to assemble and worship freely without fear.”

Bryant remains in the Johnston County Jail awaiting his next trial date. In the 15 previous incidents where he was arrested for trespassing or stalking, Bryant has never tried to post bail, always waiting in jail for his court date.
