Suspect Confesses To Starting Grass Fire

A fire that burned a grassy area in Benson was intentionally set.  Around 4:30pm Tuesday, the Benson Fire Department responded to a grass fire on North Honeycutt Street near North Wall Street.  Firefighters quickly extinguished the small fire that had burned a 30 foot section of grass.

Authorities said 52 year-old Peter Joseph Sweazy of Hannah Creek Road, Four Oaks was sitting just feet away from the fire.  Sweazy reportedly admitted to starting the fire with a bic lighter saying he was trying to clean up the property.  However, Sweazy admitted he didn’t know the owner of the property nor did he have permission to burn it.

Sweazy was arrested at the scene and charged with damage to property, a misdemeanor.  He was given a $250 bond.  Damage to the grass was estimated at $50.
