A Smithfield man was apprehended early this morning (Wednesday) following a two county chase that started in Wake County and ended in Johnston County.
One of the men in the vehicle reportedly fleeing from officers was identified as Dayon Shaikel Surrett, 22, of Ray Drive, Smithfield.
Surrett was one of three people linked by Johnston County deputies to a rash of convenience store break-ins in October and November 2020. They included break-ins at Mac’s General Merchandise at 4432 Highway 242 South, Dunn; Brewer’s Gas & Grill at 11413 NC 42 East, Middlesex; Blackmon’s Crossroads Country Store at 5989 Strickland’s Crossroads Road, Four Oaks; Barefoot’s Country Store at 3295 US Hwy 701 South, Four Oaks; Myers Community Mart at 4321 US Hwy 70 East, Smithfield; and Jack’s Food Mart at 7065 NC Hwy 50 North, Benson.
Authorities seized an undisclosed amount of cash, tobacco products, 9mm ammunition and shotgun shells from the vehicle stopped this morning on Highway 42 West of Clayton.
Surrett is being held on a $600,000 bond at the Johnston County Jail. Two others had previously been charged for their alleged roles in the convenience store break-ins.
