Suspect In January Shooting, Manhunt Indicted

A man who allegedly shot a woman in the hip then fled into a wooded area on January 19th prompting a two day manhunt has been indicted by a Johnston County Grand Jury.

69 year-old David Lee McKinney of 1715 Fire Department Road allegedly shot Rena Thompson during a dispute over money.  McKinney then fled into a heavily wooded area behind his home and next to the Neuse River. He wasn’t arrested until January 21st after showing up at a home on Powhatan Road.

McKinney was disoriented due to exposure to the cold weather. He was hospitalized from Jan. 21st – 25th for a medical illness before being jailed.

This month a Grand Jury handed down a True Bill of Indictment against McKinney for the shooting charging him with felony assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill inflicting serious injury.
