Suspect Who Escaped From Jail In 2002 Returned To NC

A man who escaped from the Sampson County Jail in April 2002 has been returned to North Carolina to stand trial.

David Melvin was one of four men who cut through the bars at the back of a cell, removed a wall air conditioner then escaped through the opening.

Melvin, 34,  fled to Florida after his escape and was captured there. He spent 16 years in prison in Florida for unrelated crimes. Upon his release from the Florida Department of Corrections, he was transferred to the Sampson County Jail to stand trial for the 2002 escape. Melvin was in the Clinton jail at the time on a breaking and entering charge.
