Suspects Accused Of Trying To Defraud Grocery Store

Two Smithfield residents were arrested Monday afternoon after Smithfield Police were dispatched to Food Lion at 851 West Market Street.

Police allege one of the suspects shoplifted steaks and tampons from the business and the second suspect attempted to return the stolen items for a refund.

Brittany Elizabeth Moore, 31, of Stancil Street, was charged with misdemeanor larceny and felony aiding and abetting obtaining property by false pretenses. Her bond was set at $10,000.

Rodney Neil Strickland, 50, of Strickland Street, Smithfield was charged with felony obtaining property by false pretenses. His bail was set at $5,000.

Police recovered the stolen items and $33.93 reportedly refunded.

Officers also towed a 2003 GMC SUV from the parking lot the suspects had reportedly driven to the store.
