Suspects Arrested For Passing Counterfeit Business Checks

Two Clayton residents are facing felony charges after authorities said they passed counterfeit checks using account information from legitimate businesses.

Charles Quintel Lyons, 23, and Kala Brie Gulley, 25, both of Cooper Branch Road, Clayton were arrested October 8th for obtaining property by false pretense and conspiracy to obtain property by false pretense.

In May 2020, Charles Lyons is accused of passing a $522.40 counterfeit check at Walmart in Clayton. The check was counterfeited using the identity of a Clayton urgent care.  That same month, Kala Gulley reported cashed a counterfeit check at Walmart on Highway 42 in Cleveland for $492.40.  That check was counterfeited using the identity of a restaurant on Creedmoor Road in Raleigh.

Lyons was arrested by the Johnston County Sheriff’s Office and jailed on a $65,000 bond.  Gulley was arrested by deputies and confined in Johnston County Jail on a $5,000 bond.
