Teen Caught With Large Amount Of Narcotics At License Checkpoint

SAFE Team deputies with the Johnston County Sheriff’s Office have made another significant drug bust at a random license checkpoint.  Around 11:55am Wednesday, deputies were conducting a license checkpoint on Woods Crossroads Road at McLamb Road outside of Benson.

A 2019 Infiniti approached the checkpoint and stopped.  A deputy said he detected an odor of marijuana coming from the passenger area and a passenger attemptin to place an item in her groin area.

The officer asked the female to exit the vehicle, at which time a bag fell onto the ground. Inside the bag, officers said they found 22 grams of marijuana and 5 grams of marijuana wax.

Eighteen year-old Valana Makel Spears of E Townsend Street, Dunn was taken into custody. While being processed into the Johnston County Jail, a plastic bag was located in her groin area. That bag allegedly contained 64 grams of heroin, 35 grams of cocaine, and 3 grams of methamphetamines.  Combined, the drugs had an estimated street value in excess of $14,000.

Spears was charged with six counts of narcotics trafficking, three counts of possession of controlled substances, and one count of possessing drug paraphernalia.  Spears was booked into the Johnston County Jail and held under a $225,000 bond.
