The Johnston County Sheriff’s Office announced today (Thursday) the arrest of a third suspect in the fatal shooting of a Clayton teenager last month at a home on Blackthorne Court off Cleveland Road.
With the assistance of the NC SBI and Morrisville Police, 23 year-old James Sonnett Brodie Jr. of Avery Street, Garner was arrested in Morrisville on Wednesday without incident. Brodie was returned to Johnston County and formally charged with first degree murder and assault with a deadly weapon for intent to kill.
18 year-old Joshua Caleb Draughon was arrested July 15th after arriving at the Wake County Courthouse for an unrelated matter. 19 year-old Quashaad Powell turned himself in to authorities in Wake County on July 16th.
Brodie, Draughon and Powell are charged in the murder of 15 year-old Kaylen Marion Middleton and the wounding of 20 year-old Desmond Tyrese Barnes in a drive-by shooting around 1:30am on July 13th. Both victims were outside a home when they were reportedly shot by the suspects. Middleton died at the scene. Barnes was treated and released for a gunshot wound to his foot. Middleton was a student at Cleveland High School.
Sheriff’s Captain Jeff Caldwell said detectives still investigating the homicide. “It is believed a conflict over a controlled substance may have been the cause of the murder and assault,” Caldwell said.
