Tips From Public Help Authorities Identify, Arrest Suspect

BENSON – Tips from the public helped Johnston County sheriff’s investigators identify and arrest a suspect in a credit card fraud case. On May 25th, an 18 year-old customer was shopping inside the Dollar General at 12347 NC Highway 210, Benson, near McGee’s Crossroads, and accidentally left her cell phone case on a shelf when she picked up an item to purchase.

When she returned a few minutes later the cell phone case, containing her driver’s license and credit cards, were gone.

Surveillance video at Dollar General captured a shopper wearing an Amazon uniform pick up the phone and steal the credit cards before discarding the phone in the store. Later, someone tried to use one of the stolen financial cards.

Johnston County Report published the photos of the suspect and tips from the public helped detectives identify the suspect.

Dwayne Keith Toomer, 40, of Kenan Road, Four Oaks was arrested June 28th and charged with two felony counts of financial card theft. His jail booking report listed his employer as Amazon in Garner.

Toomer was held on a $10,000 bond at the Johnston County Jail.
