A 20 year-old man standing in his front yard was hit by a pickup truck that left the roadway Friday afternoon. Authorities say it was no accident.
Around 4:40pm, county deputies allege Nicholas Joseph Stanley was standing in the front yard of his home on Amy Lane outside of Benson. The driver of a Ram 1500 pickup, Cody Dwaine Messer, 18, of the 2000 block of Stewart Road, Four Oaks allegedly drove off the roadway, through a ditch, and into Stanley’s yard striking him with the truck.
The impact was so violent it threw Stanley into the air and knocked him out of his shoes.
Messer failed to stop at the scene. Friday night a relative contacted Johnston County deputies indicating Messer was at his Stewart Road home and wanted to speak with officers. Messer was arrested and charged with felony assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill. He was held under a $150,000 bond.
Stanley was rushed to the hospital suffering from broken bones and other injuries. His injuries were classified as serious. Authorities said the two men knew one another and had exchanged words just prior to the incident.
