Truck Snags Power Lines, Closes US 70

SELMA – Both directions of US Highway 70 near Selma were closed Monday morning after a dump truck snapped the power lines running across the four lane highway. A power pole was also knocked down, causing a brief power outage in the area.

The accident happened around 9:00am on US 70 between Oak Street and the Neuse River bridge. An 18 wheeler dump truck had its canopy cover in the up position and hit the power lines.

Two people in a car sustained minor injuries when they tried to avoid the downed lines.

Town of Selma power crews responded and had most of the power restored in the area within minutes.

However, it took several hours to replace the pole and replace the power lines.

The NC Department of Transportation is detouring traffic on US 70 between Buffalo Road and Wilson’s Mills Road. The DOT estimates the roadway will reopen by 3:15 this afternoon.
