BUIES CREEK – Zach Neto and Connor Denning were tabbed as third-team preseason all-Americans by Collegiate Baseball. The duo was each all-conference performers a season ago, with Neto also landing on a handful of 2021 all-American teams.
Neto, a redshirt sophomore, played all over the diamond for the Camels last year before finding his home at shortstop for the second half of the season. The Miami, Fla. native hit .405 with 12 home runs and 58 RBI on the year to earn numerous all-America honors. He followed up his 2021 campaign with a strong summer with the Brewster Whitecaps in the Cape Cod League to help launch him up MLB Draft boards. Perfect Game currently has him No. 22 among draft-eligible players for the upcoming 2022 MLB Draft.
Denning, now a redshirt senior, started all 51 games for the Camels in 2021. He served as the primary center fielder and was a weapon in the 2-hole of the batting order. Denning hit .340 as a switch-hitter with 11 home runs and 34 RBI. He also tallied 26 doubles on the season, the third-most in the country and good for the most doubles-per-game at 0.51. The Phoenix, Ariz. native figures to return to his post in centerfield and bat near the top of the lineup again for the Camels this season.
Denning and Neto represent the first time two Camels have been named preseason all-Americans in the same season. The pair are the first preseason all-Americans at Campbell since Cole Hallum was also named to the third team by Collegiate Baseball in 2016.
