Authorities are investigating two overnight shootings in Sampson County that are initially believed to be unrelated.
The first shooting was reported Monday night in the 900 block of The Avenue outside of Clinton. Sampson County deputies arrived and discovered the victim had already left the scene in a private vehicle to be taken to Sampson Regional Medical Center. The victim, 38 year-old LaShanda Yvette Petty, had been shot once in her lower extremities. Authorities said her injuries were not life threatening.
Deputies said they found a man hiding outside the property in the possession of a stolen firearm. The suspect, 43 year-old Daniel O’Neal Gaither, of the same residence was detained. He was later charged with assault with a deadly weapon inflicting serious injury and possession of a stolen firearm. Gaither was held under a $115,000 bond.
Early this morning (Tuesday) an unrelated shooting was reported in the 200 block of Byrd-Yancey Bass Road near Clinton. Two teenagers, ages 17 and 18, had been shot and were receiving first aid on the scene by family members. Relatives said they were in the residence when gunshots rang out and bullets began piercing the walls of their singlewide mobile home. The two teens were struck by the gunfire.
A second nearby home was also damaged by the gunfire but no one in that home was injured.
18 year-old Kweli Harrington and the 17 year-old victim, whose name was not released, were transported to Sampson Regional Medical Center for treatment. Authorities said no one was able to provide a description of the suspect.
