Unemployed Man Loses $10,000 In Job Scam

An unemployed Johnston County man is out $10,000 after falling victim to a job scam. The 46 year-old victim said he had been searching for a full-time job for nearly four months. He had placed his resume on several job placement websites.

On March 1st, the Cleveland-area resident said he was contacted by a person claiming to be with human resources for a company looking to hire him. The scammer said they were planning to open a new office in Charlotte and he needed to complete some online training and help purchase equipment for the new office.

The victim used his own money to purchase 12 Apple MacBooks valued at $15,000. He said he was wired $5,000 for payment for 4 of the MacBooks and mailed them to the individual. The victim said it appeared the man wired money for the remaining 8 MacBooks and he shipped them as requested. It turned out the second wire transfer was cancelled.

Authorities said the victim was swindled out of $10,000. Detectives with the Johnston County Sheriff’s Office are investigating the case.
