A Clayton woman has been arrested after allegedly helping prepare taxes for someone she knew, only to steal the victim’s tax refund.
Clayton Police say 38-year-old Stephanie Lynn Wilkerson, of Stallings Mill Loop in Clayton, agreed to help someone fill out their income taxes but when she did, she allegedly routed the victim’s refund from the IRS into a fake checking account she’d set up using the victim’s personal information.
The victim reported the fraud and Clayton detectives were able to contact various banks where Wilkerson had set up accounts in the victim’s name to funnel the money.
Wilkerson was arrested on the Clayton warrants by Smithfield Police on September 10th. She faces charges of obtaining property by false pretense and two counts of identity theft. Police did not say how much money Wilkerson reportedly stole from the victim.
She’s in the Johnston County Detention Center being held on $50,000 bond.
