COATS – A woman was killed near Coats Monday afternoon after her white passenger car collided with an 18-wheeler hauling sweet potatoes.

The crash happened shortly after 4 p.m. at the intersection of Delma Grimes Road and N.C. Highway 27 East, Trooper Anthony Cox of the N.C. Highway Patrol said.

The driver of the 18-wheeler struck a guardrail and overturned while the passenger car went off the road to the right down an embankment which is covered in tall grass.

Cox said the woman, who was driving on Delma Grimes Road, stopped at a stop sign but pulled into the path of the truck which was headed east towards Benson.

The woman was pronounced dead at the scene and the driver of the truck was taken to a local hospital, Cox said.

Sweet potatoes were strewn all over N.C. 27 East near the guardrail where the 18-wheeler overturned.

In addition to the Highway Patrol, Coats-Grove Fire Rescue and Harnett County Emergency Medical Services responded to the scene.
