Wrong Way Driver Causes Fatal Head-On Crash, SHP Says

PINE LEVEL – The State Highway Patrol arrested a driver for reportedly causing a fatal head-on collision on Highway 70 near Pine Level. The collision was reported at 12:40am today (Monday) in the eastbound lanes of Highway 70 near the intersection of Braswell Road.

Troopers said Rolbin Fernando Pacheco Diaz, 35, of Third Avenue, Smithfield was operating a black 2005 Ford F-150 pickup westbound in the eastbound lanes when it struck head-on a Chrysler passenger car traveling eastbound. The driver of the Chrysler, the only occupant in the vehicle, died from their injuries.

Diaz, who was reportedly impaired on alcohol at the time of the collision, was arrested for felony death by motor vehicle. The name of the victim killed in the crash has not been released.
