1,100 Gallon Sewage Spill Reported In Smithfield

Johnston County Public Utilities said about 1,100 gallons of untreated wastewater spilled from their wastewater collection system in Smithfield on Wednesday.

The spill was discovered around 12:15pm in the vicinity of 104 S. Front Street.  The spill occurred for about 35 minutes and was caused by the failure of an air release valve from recent extreme weather conditions.

The untreated wastewater entered into the Neuse River.

The NC Department of Environmental Quality, Division of Water Resources was notified and is reviewing the incident. Anyone with questions about the spill can contact Johnston County Public Utilities at 919-989-5075.
