Approximately 12,000 gallons of untreated wastewater escaped from a manhole in the 600 block of Ray Street in Selma this week.
Alex Fuller, Public Services Director for the Town of Selma, said the spill occurred between Monday and Tuesday due to excessive rainfall.
The overflow lasted approximately 8 hours. The wastewater flowed into a ditch that leads to Moccasin Creek. Fuller said all possible procedures were implemented to minimize the discharge. The spill has been reported to the North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality, Division of Water Resources.
