FOUR OAKS – A heavy downpour may have been the cause of a massive I-95 motor vehicle accident on Monday evening near Four Oaks. It started at about 6:30pm when traffic slowed due to the rain, followed by a series of accidents nearly a mile long. In the end, there were 13 people injured in the 11 vehicle crash, which included two tractor trailers.
Johnston County responders immediately moved resources to the scene, including more than a dozen ambulances with equipment and firefighters from Four Oaks and Benson fire departments, every available Highway Patrol Trooper and a fleet of tow trucks.
Those involved in the accident were quickly evaluated, treated and transported to area hospitals. The uninjured remained with their wrecked cars and trucks and were assisted as needed by firefighters.
Emergency workers moved vehicles as quickly as possible to reopen the busy interstate but the highway was reduced to one lane each direction and intermittently closed for the next two hours.
The Highway Patrol was investigating the initial cause of the accidents.
