A suspect who led state troopers on a high speed chase was injured in a collision. Around 11:00pm Tuesday, a trooper was on on Interstate 40 in Johnston County and clocked an eastbound passenger car traveling 106mph.
Instead of pulling over, the driver reportedly accelerated to speeds of 135 mph as they continued from I-40 onto southbound Interstate 95. Near the Benson exit, the driver pulled over and dropped off a passenger who ran from the scene. The vehicle then continued southbound on I-95 into Harnett and Cumberland counties at high speeds.
Troopers attempted to perform a safe “rolling road block” in order to slow, then stop, the fleeing driver. Instead, the suspect swerved into the trooper’s cruiser and knocked him off the interstate near the Godwin exit. The patrol car ended up in a ditch filled with water but the officer was uninjured. The suspect then crashed her car into a guardrail. She was transported to a Fayetteville hospital for a possible broken arm.
The driver, identified as Audrey Cicci, age 36, was wanted for possession of a stolen motor vehicle and common law robbery. In addition, Cicci was charged with felony fleeing to elude arrest, assault with a deadly weapon, speeding, aggressive driving, driving on a suspended license, driving without headlights, resisting an officer and a seat belt violation.
