The search for a new Smithfield Police chief continues.
The department has been without a permanent chief since Michael Scott was hired as the town manager. Scott had been the police chief since 2009.
Police Captain Keith Powell has been serving as interim police chief since Scott’s appointment to town manager on May 3rd.
Scott told members of the Smithfield Town Council this week 14 applicants had applied for the position. He announced this week that number has been narrowed to seven. The seven remaining candidates have been sent questionnaires to complete and return this month. Those questionnaires will be reviewed to narrow the field even further.
No specific date or timeline was given as to when a new chief will be named.
