There is a crowded field of candidates for the Johnston County School Board. Five candidates filed Friday before the 12 Noon deadline, bringing the total number of people seeking a seat on the school board to sixteen.
Four seats on the Board of Education are up for re-election in 2020. Three of the four incumbents are seeking re-election. They include Ronald Johnson, Teresa Grant, and former chairman Mike Wooten who filed just before the deadline. Dr. Peggy Smith did not seek re-election.
The other candidates include: Kelly O’Hanlon-Peedin, Melynda Slay, Lyn Andrews, Kay Carroll, Kenon Crumble, Ava Atkinson Gaines, Mark Lane, Chuck Williams, Carolyn Cash, Rick Mercier, Michelle Antoine, Terry Tippett, and Yvonne Marlowe.
Because there are more than 11 candidates running for school board, it will trigger a primary election for the candidates on March 3, 2020. The primary will narrow the field of candidates from 16 to 8. The 8 candidates with the most votes in March will then advance to the November 3, 2020 General Elections.
