Students representing seven high schools and Neuse Charter School in Johnston County recently completed Junior Leadership Johnston County 2015.
Junior Leadership Johnston is a program to assist emerging youth in their efforts to prepare for leadership positions in business, community, education, and government affairs. The weeklong program, hosted by Johnston Community College, is open to rising high school juniors and provides participants with an opportunity to visit and learn from leaders at local businesses and industries, health services, nonprofit agencies, local tourist attractions, and county government including law enforcement agencies. Students apply for the program in February of their sophomore year. Through a selection process, students are invited to participate.
Highlights of this year’s program included tours of Novo Nordisk, Sysco, Ava Gardner Museum, Johnston County Heritage Center, Clayton Center for Active Aging, Johnston Health, Clayton Fire Department, Johnston County Sheriff’s Office, and other county locations.
The students met with the superintendent of Johnston County Schools and his cabinet members. They also portrayed county commissioners and county agency representatives when they were given the task of balancing the county budget.
The program is funded by donors and volunteers and concluded with an evening banquet where the students made presentations based upon the week’s activities and received certificates of completion.
