The Johnston County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the drowning death of a small child.
Just after 9:00pm Sunday, emergency workers responded to a drowning in a backyard pool in the 900 block of Lee Road outside of Clayton. Authorities said a Clayton woman was visiting a friend’s home with her 18 month-old daughter. The mother needed to run an errand and asked an adult at the home to watch out for her child, according to Tammy Amaon, Public Information Officer with the Johnston County Sheriff’s Office.
A short time afterwards the child was found in the pool. The child was unresponsive when pulled from the pool. Rescue workers spent more than an hour trying to revive the child without any success.
The name of the 18 month-old was not released on Monday. Authorities said the investigation was still ongoing but it appears to be a tragic accident.
