1925 County Commissioner Chairman Recognized

Commissioner Adron Harold MorganRelatives of the late County Commissioner Adron Harold Morgan were present at the Johnston County Commissioners meeting on Monday for the unveiling of his portrait.

Morgan served as a Johnston County Commissioners from 1924 until 1926 and as Chairman in 1925 after the death of then Chairman J.W. Jones in August of that year. Morgan was a well-known Primitive Baptist preacher and won election on the Republican ticket in 1924 when most local offices were held by Democrats.

Morgan, who was born in 1895, was from the Benson area, off Highway 242 South near Highway 55.  In addition to serving as a county commissioner he was also superintendent of roads in Johnston County in the 1920s during the “chain gang” era.

He died in 1963 and is buried in Sunset Memorial Park in Smithfield.
