Two guests were injured by accidental gunfire inside a Smithfield hotel room.
Smithfield Police responded to the Sleep Inn & Suites at 270 North Equity Drive around 10:00pm Sunday for a report of two people being shot. Officers and EMS personnel found two male victims suffering from gunshot wounds to the leg. Both were transported to the hospital for treatment of serious but non-life threatening injuries.
On Monday, police said the double shooting was being treated as accidental. A man was reportedly handling a firearm in his motel room when it accidentally discharged striking him in the leg. The bullet also struck his co-worker in the leg.
The names of the two individuals was not released.
Although the shooting was accidental, police plan to charge the 48 year-old Sweetwater, Wyoming man from the hospital for possession of a firearm by a felon when he is discharged from the hospital.
