Two people are dead following a fiery crash this morning near Smithfield.
A Ford Mustang ran off a rural roadway, struck several trees and burst into flames, killing two people inside.
The accident was reported at 1:03am in the 2800 block of Crantock Road off Highway 210.
The vehicle ran off the roadway and into a deep ditch where it collided with a group of trees and caught fire. A passing motorist saw the burning car and tried to use a fire extinguisher but the fire was too hot.
The car was fully engulfed in flames when fire and EMS crews arrived on the scene. After the flames were extinguished the victim’s bodies were discovered in the wreckage.
The bodies were sent to the NC Medical Examiner in Raleigh for identification. The NC Highway Patrol has not released the names of the person’s who were killed.
