The Johnston County School Board has approved the 2016-2017 school calendar.
Chief Personnel Officer Brian Vetrano said the Calendar Committee reviewed 23 possible calendars and narrowed the number down to 3, which were placed on the school systems website for review and feedback.
The school calendar selected was very similar, Vetrano said, to the 2015-16 school year.
The first day of classes for the 2016-17 school year is Monday, August 29th. The first 9 weeks will end on October 28. A three day break is included for Thanksgiving. A 2 weeks break is included for Christmas. The first semester will end on January 25, 2017. The third 9 week grading period ends March 30, 2017. Spring break is April 10-14, 2017. The last day of school will be June 8, 2017. Seniors will graduate on Friday, June 9, 2017.
Five inclement weather days are build into the calendar. Early release dates will be determined later.
State law required the calendar to contain 2015 days. There must either be 185 student days or 1,025 hours; 10 annual leave (vacation) days; and 11 holidays.
The Calendar Committee, which consists of individuals from various employee groups, students, parents, and community members met several times before making the recommendation to the school board.
