For the past three years, WTSB Radio and JoCoReport.com with assistance from the NC Department of Transportation have compiled a list of the most dangerous intersections in Johnston County. Drivers likely travel through one or more of these intersections every day, not realizing some are more dangerous than others.
The statistics are based on where the most wrecks occur and where you are more likely to be involved in a crash.
The 2018 DOT study looked at three years of crash data. The majority of the accidents occurred in the western part of the county, which has the highest population and highest numbers of vehicles on the road. Our report also included accidents within 150 feet of the intersection.
For the third consecutive year, the most dangerous intersection remains Interstate 40 and Highway 42 in Cleveland. 105 crashes have occurred at the interchange in the last 3 years. That is the lowest number of reported crashes there the last 3 years, but still high enough to keep it as the most dangerous intersection.
Second on this list was Highway 42 at Cleveland Road. It also ranked 2nd in our previous three reports. The intersection has seen 82 crashes since 2014.
Ranking 3rd on the list, for the second consecutive year, was I-40 at Highway 210. 80 crashes were reported there from 2014-17 up from 77 accidents in our 2017 report.

The number one cause of crashes were rear end accidents as drivers were attempting to slow down or stop at an intersection. The number two was sideswipe collisions while headed in the same direction, followed by accidents while making left turns.
Factors such whether the accidents were property damage only, involved injuries and the severity of the injuries were not included in our study.
Last year, Cleveland Road at Josephine Road was 31st on our list. US301 at Waddell Street in Selma ranked 40th in 2017. Both intersections were not on the 2018 list.
(Note: The 2017 list contained 41 intersections. The 2018 list was expanded to include 49.)
