$241,955 Bid Awarded For Street Resurfacing Project

SMITHFIELD – The Smithfield Town Council awarded a bid for a street resurfacing project during their June 4 meeting.

The council agreed to repave South Third Street, from the intersection of E. Johnston Street, south to the intersection with US 301.

Seven companies submitted bids for the project. The bid ranged from $241,955 to $458,280. Daniel’s Inc of Garner was the low bidder and was selected for the project.

The same company recently completed a resurfacing project in the Town Hall parking lot. Public Works Director Lawrence Davis said he was pleased with their work.

A timeline for the South Third Street resurfacing has not been determined.

JCC Parking Lot Lighting
In an unrelated project, the Town Council voted unanimously to awarded a $226,493 bid to upgrade the lighting, with 95 new poles and new LED lights, in the parking lot at Johnston Community College.

JCC leases the poles and the lights from the Town of Smithfield at a monthly cost of approximately $8,900, according to Public Utilities Director Ted Credle.

The Town should be able to recoup the cost of the lighting upgrade in just over two years.
