HARNETT COUNTY – Police are reminding people to avoid creating easy targets for car burglars after a rash of recent vehicle break-ins were reported in Harnett County.
The latest cases of smash-and-grab thefts were found among 23 cars in a parking lot at The Groves at 421 in Lillington at 4:35 a.m. Wednesday. The discovery came after Lillington police were dispatched to the 61 Grove Circle apartment complex for a report of two break-ins and found an additional 21 others. Broken windows and missing items were noted among the affected cars.
Police say the thieves broke windows to gain access to the cars that were locked. Items of value easily seen inside a vehicle can make it a target for break-ins. People are reminded to always lock their cars and to remove or hide any items of value before they do that.
The best practice is to remove items of value from the vehicle, according to Lillington Police Department Capt. S. Goodman.
It took several hours for investigators from the Lillington police and the Harnett County Sheriff’s Office Crime Scene Unit to process and document each of the break-ins.
Two similar break-ins were reported on Monday night at a different location and investigators are attempting to determine if there are any links between the thefts.
Lillington Police Department Lt. S. Letuli and Sgt. S. Gardner are the investigators handling the case.
Goodman asks that anyone with information regarding these crimes contact Letuli at sletuli@lillingtonnc.org, Gardner at sgardner@lillingtonnc.org, or call the county’s non-emergency number of 910-893-9111.
So much crime since January 20th. Crime up. Egg prices up. Promises broken.
