300,000 Gallon Sewage Spill Reported

The Town of Benson has reported a discharge of untreated wastewater from September 13 until September 18 of an estimated 300,000 gallons from a manhole on Martin Street and second location at Martin Street and Wall Street. Runoff also occurred at service connections on Martin and Wall Streets.

The overflow was due to rainwater infiltration into Benson’s wastewater system during Hurricane Florence. The untreated wastewater was discharged into Driving Branch in the Neuse River Basin.

The Division of Water Resources has been notified of the spill and is reviewing the matter.  Citizens with questions can contact Paul Allen, Chief Plant Operator for the Town of Benson at 919-894-3553.
